LINCOLN, NEBRASKA – Iowa State fell to Nebraska by a score of 197-101 in their first meet of the 2026-27 season. The Cyclones were led by strong performances from several swimmers and divers, including Grace Swoboda sweeping the breaststroke events.
"We have a lot of things to clean up and keep working on developing...but having the right mindset, having the right process, that I am really proud of," said head coach Matt Leach.
How It Happened
In all but one swimming event, the Cyclones grabbed a podium finish.
Anja Peck received a trifecta of third place finishes in the 100 & 200 Breast, and the 200 IM, Carlotta Gazzola did the same twice in the 500 & 1000 Free, Asia Salvato followed suit in the 100 & 200 Fly, and closes out with Piper Hagen in the 200 Free and Kendall Schindler in the 50 Free.
Grace Swoboda stood out by winning both the 100 & 200 Breast. A moment of the meet was a valiant effort in the 200 Breast by Swoboda tracking down Nebraska freshman, Dominika Borkowska, and getting the win by a hundredth of a second. The 200 Breast also rewarded Anja Peck and Abbi Crum with their third and fourth place finishes, respectively.
The 200 IM was also valuable to Iowa State with Emma Kuhn getting second, Anja Peck with another third-place finish, and Piper Hagen coming in fourth.
Emma Kuhn also put in strong performances in addition to the 200 IM with another runner-up finish in the 100 Free with a time of 52.54.
"At the end of the day, compared to last year in our first meet against Nebraska, we were about 90 to 95% better," said head coach Matt Leach. "When you look at where this team has progressed, I am very excited. For me, this has been a great first step and a much better start."
The diving team put in an exceptional performance with an all-around effort. In her first collegiate dual meet, freshman Katie Malm earned second place in the 1-meter, with a score of 265.05. Then, the 3-meter saw Iona Moffat get the win, posting a 287.03, with Maggie Bendell finishing in second with a score of 282.30. With these scores, Malm, Moffat, and Bendell have already made the cut for the NCAA Zone Diving Qualifications in March.
"They did a very nice job being at a much more consistent level," said head diving coach Jeff Warrick. "[Katie] is only a freshman walking in and places the highest on our team on the 1-meter. Then, on the 3-meter, I was very happy to see both Iona and Maggie being more consistent with what we've been working on."
