AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team picked up its first victory of the season by taking down St. Thomas by a score of 6-1. The Cyclones move to 1-2 on the season with the victory.
In doubles, St. Thomas kept it close early, but the Cyclones pulled away on Courts 1 and 3, where No. 34 Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Stanislava Shulzhenko took a 6-3 victory, and a pair of freshmen in Gabriella Kellner and Valentina Vargas won 6-2.
In singles, the Cyclones bounced back from an early defeat to rattle off five straight victories. Alicia Dale continued her freshman tear, defeating Lily Olson to improve to 3-0 on the season. Valeska San Martin Ramirez picked up her first singles victory of the season, downing Else Vander Stichele, 6-3, 6-1. No. 45 Alberto Vilar and Suzanie Pretorius each took care of business on their courts, winning 6-3, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively. Vargas capped off the day by earning her first singles victory of the year over Ingrid Forsberg, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.
The Cyclones are back in action Friday at Noon at UNLV.
