AMES, Iowa – For the second-straight season, senior infielder Sydney Malott and junior pitcher Lauren Schurman have earned Big 12 weekly honors in the same week. Malott was named the league's Player of the Week, while Schurman was tabbed as Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Malott becomes the first Cyclone to earn multiple Player of the Week honors in their career since Sami Williams, who earned a pair in 2021. Overall, it is the 11th time a Cyclone athlete has earned Player of the Week. Schurman, meanwhile, becomes the first Cyclone to earn two career Pitcher of the Week awards since Ellie Spelhaug. Schurman's accolade marks the tenth time an ISU player has earned Pitcher of the Week.
Last year, the two earned the same respective awards after ISU went on the road and took a series win against No. 17 Oklahoma State. It is just the third time ever that ISU has had multiple weekly award winners in the same week.
Both Malott and Schurman had big weeks as ISU went 4-0, winning at Creighton and sweeping Houston. The sweep over Houston marked the team's first home three-game sweep since 2019.
Malott totaled five hits on the week, scoring a team-high seven runs. Of her five hits, three were homers as she racked up a team-best eight RBI. In addition to her explosive bat, Malott also drew four walks – tied for the most on the team. The senior out of Liberty, Missouri, was one of four Cyclones to collect hits in all four outings this week as she led the team in both total bases (14) and slugging percentage (1.273). Malott also fielded all 40 chances cleanly, earning 38 putouts and two assists.
Schurman pitched in all four ISU outings this week, earning the win in all four games. She finished the week with a 1.05 ERA, allowing just two runs in 13.1 innings of action. Opposing batters hit just .208 off of Schurman, who, despite having pitched half of the team's total innings on the week, allowed the fewest runs of any Cyclone arm.
Both Malott and Schurman will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, as Iowa State is set to host Drake for a midweek contest. Tomorrow's game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+. As always, admission to the Cyclones Sports Complex is free.
