Owen Sawyer Wins 124th Iowa Amateur Golf Championship

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Iowa State rising senior Owen Sawyer won the 124th Iowa Amateur Men's Golf Championship, becoming the first golfer since Bo Anderson in 2001-02 to win back-to-back Iowa Amateur Golf Championships. The Cedar Falls native shot a bogey-free 64 final round to finish 16-under par for the 54 holes.
With a 200 for the 54 holes, Sawyer became just the third golfer to be at 200 or better as the winner. Mike McCoy shot a 196 to win the 2010 title, while Charlie Hoyle shot a 200 to win the 2023 tournament.Â
Sawyer finished seven strokes ahead of former Cyclone Nate McCoy, who tied for second at -9. Sawyer shot a tournament-low 66 in the opening round, followed by a 70 in the second round before setting a new tournament-low in the final round with a 64.
The victory earns Sawyer an exemption to the 126th US Amateur, which will take place on Aug. 10-16 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Sawyer also played in the 125th US Amateur, where he shot a 149 in the first two rounds.Â
Four former and current Cyclones, including Sawyer and McCoy, finished in the Top-10 at the event. Dianchao Wu tied for sixth with a 211, while Zach May tied for 10th with a 213. Ben Herrera tied for 18th with a 215, while Drew Hensen tied for 40th with a 219. Nate McCoy won the 2022 and 2024 Iowa Amateur, while Herrera won the 2009 title.Â
