McCommon Leads Cyclones After 36 Holes at Gopher Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Iowa State men's golf team climbed one spot on the leaderboard after a strong second round at the 2nd Swing Gopher Invitational, shooting a 289 (+5) to finish the opening day in a tie for 10th at 590 (+22).
The Cyclones improved by 12 strokes from their opening-round score of 301 (+17), with three Cyclones shooting a 72 (+1) or better in the second round.
Jackson McCommon led Iowa State through 36 holes, finishing tied for 20th at 3-over. McCommon followed his opening-round 73 (+2) with a 72 (+1) in the second round. He also tied for first in the field with a 2.75 scoring average on par-3 holes.
Owen Sawyer finished the day tied for 28th at 4-over 146 after shooting a 75 (+4) in the second round. Sawyer opened the tournament with an even-par 71 to sit tied for third after 18 holes and finished the opening day tied for third in the field with a 2.88 scoring average on par-3 holes.
Dianchao Wu carded the Cyclones' lowest score of the second round, shooting a 70 (-1). Wu moved up 24 spots on the individual leaderboard to finish the day tied for 48th at 7-over. His six birdies through 36 holes tied for 12th in the field.
Drew Hensen followed with a 72 (+1) in the second round to finish tied for 67th at 10-over. Hensen closed his second round with a strong stretch, shooting par or better on 15 of his final 16 holes.
Ben Wheeler rounded out the Cyclone lineup with a 75 (+4) in the second round, finishing the day tied for 70th at 11-over.
Jesse Trembath (Ind.) opened the tournament with a 73 (+2), carding a 37 on each nine. He followed with another 73 (+2) in the second round, shooting a 39 on the front nine before closing with a 35 on the back nine. Trembath finished the opening day tied for 27th at 4-over.
The Cyclones will return to Windsong Farm Golf Club tomorrow, teeing off at 7:31 a.m. CT for the final round of the 2nd Swing Gopher Invitational.
