Gary Thompson, "The Roland Rocket", was ISU's first 1,000-point career scorer and the first Cyclone cager selected as a first-team All-American following the 1957 season. He concluded his three-year career with 1,253 points, ranking 15th on ISU's all-time scoring list. He was honored as the Big Seven Player of the Year after the 1957 season. His greatest legacy may be as Iowa State's first multi-sport All-American. In addition to his exploits on the basketball court, Thompson was an All-America shortstop for the Cyclones and helped the 1957 team to a berth in the NCAA College World Series. The shortstop hit .311 with four home runs and 18 RBIs in 27 games to help ISU capture the 1957 Big Seven crown.
