AMES, Iowa – In its first home game in three weeks, Iowa State (4-8-4, 0-6-2 Big 12) fell to Kansas State (6-6-4, 1-6-1 Big 12) by a score of 1-0 on a beautiful fall night at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
K-State broke the seal in the 24th minute, sliding one past Eme McClenahan to go up 1-0. Despite a career-high 12-save performance from McClenahan, ISU was unable to take advantage of its stellar keeping on the attack.
Breezie Brewer produced a career-high four shot attempts, while Alaina Villa had a pair. In total, ISU ended with nine shots, but was only able to place three on target. Makenna Marshall and McClenahan were the only athletes to play the full 90.
For K-State, Gabby DeMers paced the team with four shots, placing three of them on goal. The Wildcats' goal-scorer, Rintoul, placed three shots of her own on goal as Kansas State set a school record for shots on goal on the evening with 14. In net, Maddie Sibbing collected three saves in a clean sheet effort.
After a tightly contested shot spread in the first half, which KSU led 7-6, the Wildcats erupted for 13 second-half attempts and finished with a 20-9 shot advantage. The Cyclones had a season-high 13 saves to K-State's three, while also leading in corner kicks, 6-3.
How it Happened
After a pair of early K-State attempts were handled by the Cyclone defense, ISU responded with a pair of attempts itself. The first, taken by Brewer, flew wide, while the second, by Villa, was saved by Sibbing in the 19th minute.
The next shot came from the Wildcats and found the back of the net to put the Manhattan squad in front. After a bit of dribbling, Adelle Francis fed Rintoul in the box who'd then sneak one past McClenahan and put the Wildcats on top.
At the break, K-State held the edge in shots, 7-6, but trailed in both saves (4-2) and corner kicks (2-1). ISU only committed one first-half foul.
Despite leading, Kansas State stayed the aggressors in the second stanza, launching another 13 attempts toward McClenahan. ISU saw its best action come toward the very end of the contest, as both Lucy Froitzheim and Brewer nearly found equalizers in the last four minutes of action.
The Wildcats were able to hang on in the end, securing their first Big 12 conference win of the season.
