AMES, Iowa – Closing out its two-game homestand, Iowa State (4-5-3, 0-2-1 Big 12) earned its first conference point of the season as it battled to a 1-1 draw against Utah (4-5-3, 1-2-1 Big 12).
The Utes took an early advantage as they snuck a ball past McClenahan in the 16th minute. After a first half dominated by Utah came to a close, Iowa State would turn the tide in the second, scoring in the first five minutes to knot things up. The teams would remain tied until the 90th minute struck, and the teams finished with a tie for the second-straight season.
Sophie Forrester led the Cyclones with three shots, placing one on goal in 53 minutes of action. Breezie Brewer was the team's goal scorer, as the Alabama transfer notched her first score as a Cyclone on her only attempt – a free kick 10 yards outside the box. The backline of Makenna Marshall, Danica Lunceford and Erin Hopewell played the full 90 along with McClenahan. McClenahan would go on to finish with three saves against her former squad.
For Utah, both Sophie Bellini and Shannon Davidson had six shots apiece to lead all players. Davidson scored the team's goal in the first half, her third of the season, to put Utah in front. Seven Utes went the distance as only four players saw time off the bench. Ute keeper Anna Solomon collected four saves in the draw.
Utah held an 11-shot advantage, 19-8, outshooting the Cyclones in each half. The Utes also had more corner kicks (5-2) and saves (4-3).
How it Happened
After the teams felt each other out for the first ten minutes, Utah ripped the game's first shot at the 9:26 mark. After two more Utah attempts in quick succession, the Utes broke through on a Davidson goal at the 15:16 mark off assists from both Sophie Bellini and Reese Clem.
Utah's aggression stayed relentless as it had two more shots in the next five minutes, one off and one saved, as it continued to pressure the Cyclones. ISU was limited to just two attempts after Utah's score as it went into the break trailing the Utes, 1-0.
At the half, Utah had eight shots to ISU's three and three corner kicks to ISU's zero. There were only a combined six fouls in the first half – a number that would quadruple in the second stanza.
The Cyclones survived an early second-half shot from Utah, blocking it with solid defensive positioning, before racing down to the other side and earning a free kick. After Allison Charleston took the worse end of a foul ten yards outside the box, Brewer banged one home. The attempt bent back to the middle of the goal, catching Utah's Solomon flat-footed, as she slipped and allowed the equalizer.
Utah responded with a flurry of attempts over the next eight ticks, launching four shots to the net only to see two blocked and another saved before the fourth went awry.
Both McClenahan and Solomon had a standout save in the second half to keep the score knotted as the game clock eventually wound down to zero and the contest ended in a draw.
