AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (4-10-4, 0-8-2 Big 12) closed out its home slate Thursday evening against Oklahoma State (7-7-4, 3-5-2 Big 12), falling to the Cowgirls by a score of 2-0 on a brisk October evening.
The Pokes punched in a pair of early scores, netting both in the first 15 minutes, and rode out the remainder of the game to victory. The contest marked Coach Matt Fannon's final outing in Ames as he's set to retire at season's end.
Five Cyclones logged a pair of shots, as ISU outshot its opponent for just the second time in league play this season. Senior Erin Hopewell was the only field player to go the distance, as she totaled 90 minutes in her final home outing. Eme McClenahan had a pair of saves between the pipes, with the Cyclone defense adding another stop.
Emma Jensen paced the Cowgirl attack, launching five attempts at the net and scoring one. Also scoring for the Pokes was Sonora De Fini, who had a game-high two shots on goal. Both Raquelle Mitchell and Laudan Wilson registered assists. In the net, Avery Bass had a clean sheet and pulled down four saves.
ISU held the shot advantage, 14-13, but the Cowgirls put more on target, 5-4. OSU dominated the corner kick advantage, winning that battle 9-1. Oklahoma State had three first-half saves on its way to four total, besting ISU's three.
How it Happened
Oklahoma State was the aggressor out of the game, launching a shot in the early ticks of the second minute before eventually scoring in the third minute off a smooth Laudan Wilson assist.
Four OSU shots later and the Cowgirls found themselves with another score as Sonora De Fini converted off of Raquelle Mitchell's feed to put the Pokes up 2-0.
At the half, OSU was outshooting ISU 9-7 and had five corner kicks to the Cyclones' zero.
The Cowgirls slowed their attack in the second, attempting just four shots. ISU, on the other hand, ramped up its aggression and had seven shots on goal. The Pokes were able to deter each one, though, as they held on for their first road win of the season.
