TEMPE, Ariz. – For the first time in two years, Iowa State (4-5-4, 0-3-2 Big 12) secured back-to-back Big 12 results as it battled to a 1-1 draw against Arizona State (7-3-3, 2-2-1 Big 12) on Thursday evening.
Iowa State, who was down a player for the final 15 minutes of the match, relied heavily on its star keeper Eme McClenahan, who tied a career high with ten saves as she parried multiple ASU attempts to help ISU to a result.
Alaina Villa scored ISU's lone goal, banging home a ball from well outside the box in the 32nd minute to equalize things in the first half. Villa's goal was the third of her season, pushing her into the team lead. Both Izzy Kapanke and Allison Charleston picked up their second assist, respectively, of the season on the score. Despite the heat, Makenna Marshall, Danica Lunceford and Erin Hopewell joined McClenahan battling through the elements for a full 90 minutes.
For ASU, Mya Angus had the team's goal, punching one in at the 17:47 mark. Angus's five shots tied with teammate Addison Baltodano for a game high. Both Lucy Fazackerley and Amy Medley had assists for the Sun Devils. Arizona State finished the night with 29 total shots, placing 13 on goal. In net, Kennedy Zorn had one save.
Arizona State held the advantage in shots, 29-4, and placed 13 shots on goal compared to ISU's two. The Cyclones boasted 10 saves to ASU's one, while the Sun Devils tallied ten corner kicks to ISU's zero.
How it Happened
The Sun Devils came out of the gates ready to test the Cyclone defense, firing eight shots in the first 18 minutes. ASU's eighth shot found its way into the back of the net, as Angus beat McClenahan off of feeds from both Fazackerley and Medley to put the Sun Devils on top.
Following the score, ISU subbed in Alaina Villa for Sophie Forrester to run the point of attack. With just two shots and ASU continuing to control the game flow, ISU took advantage of a Sun Devil turnover as the ball found Charleston. Charleston then fed Kapanke, who pushed it ahead to Villa, who blasted a roughly 25-yard goal past the outstretched arm of Zorn to tie things up.
At the break, ASU was outshooting the Cyclones 16-3 and McClenahan had already picked up six saves along the way.
The second half was more of the same for the Sun Devils as they stayed the aggressors. ISU's physicality caught up to it, though, as a pair of Cyclones received yellow cards before Aubrey Crawford was booked with a red in the 75th minute, forcing ISU to compete a player down for the final 15 minutes.
Arizona State had some quality looks down the stretch, but McClenahan's repeatedly stellar efforts and a few assists from the crossbar helped keep her net unharmed as ISU left Tempe with a point.
