LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State (4-7-4, 0-5-2) fell in its penultimate road contest to Kansas (11-3-1, 5-1-1) on Friday evening, 1-0.
The Cyclones and Jayhawks sat deadlocked through 85 minutes of action until a late corner kick set piece from the Jayhawks served as a catalyst for the go-ahead score.
Breezie Brewer led the Cyclones with three shots, placing two on goal, while Izzy Kapanke, Alaina Villa and Sophie Forrester each had a pair of shots apiece. ISU's backline of Makenna Marshall, Erin Hopewell and Danica Lunceford played the complete 90 minutes, as did Allison Charleston in the midfield. In goal, McClenahan collected nine saves, one of her career best.
Marit McLaughlin was the hero for the Jayhawks, backheeling a corner kick past an ISU defender and into the net on the near post. Livvy Moore provided the feed from the corner, picking up her nation-leading 11th assist of the season. Jillian Gregorski led all players with seven shots, placing three on target, while Norah Jacomen had three shots of her own. In net, Sophie Dawe collected six saves in a clean sheet performance.
Kansas held the advantage in both shots (23-9) and corner kicks (10-0) as it was the primary aggressor on the night. The Cyclones held an edge in saves, 9-6, while Kansas was flagged for a pair of offsides.
How it Happened
The leading shot takers in the league lived up to the billing early, as the Jayhawks attempted five shots in the opening 20 minutes to ISU's one.
Despite the flurry of action from Kansas, Iowa State was able to claim its own quality attempts, seeing all four of its first-half shots being saved by Dawe. Neither team was able to break through, though, as the score at the break was 0-0.
At the break, Kansas had eight shots to ISU's four and four saves to ISU's three.
Kansas came out of the break again pushing the pace, attempting five shots in the first seven minutes of action but seeing three saved by McClenahan and the other two going wide.
The teams would continue to trade possessions and attempts with neither side able to break the stalemate. As time ticked down and with just under five minutes to go, Kansas finally got one to go as its 23rd shot of the night off of its tenth corner kick snuck past the Cyclone defense to take the lead.
ISU got a late look from Sophie Forrester at the 89:36 mark, but nothing came of it as the Jayhawks claimed the conference win, 1-0.
Fannon's Thoughts
"Tonight is a great example of why soccer can be a cruel game. We battled so incredibly well and one awkward moment cost us the match. It's hard to ask for too much more than what we gave tonight."
