Byron Robinson Jr. is in his first season as assistant defensive backs coach for the Iowa State football team.
Robinson was on head coach Jimmy Rogers’ staff in 2025 at Washington State, helping guide a Cougars team with 75 newcomers to a 7-6 finish and a win in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
WSU defensive backs played a significant role in the team’s success, ranking 13th nationally while allowing just 174.4 passing yards per game. The defense gave up just 299.5 yards of total offense per game (15th nationally) while holding opponents to just 20.2 points per game, including just 12.7 points over the course of the season’s final eight regular season games.
The McKinney, Texas, native started his coaching career at the University of Sioux Falls as running backs coach in 2021. The Cougars finished the season 8-3 with a group of players earning all-conference recognition.
Robinson Jr. coached at Tulsa (2022-23) before spending the 2024 season at Oklahoma State.
Robinson Jr. played defensive back at Abilene Christian from 2018-20, serving as team captain his final season.
Robinson Jr. earned his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian in 2020 and his master’s degree from Tulsa in 2024.
