D’Andre Payne returns to the Cyclone football program as a Quality Control assistant for the Iowa State defense.
Payne was as a graduate assistant for the Cyclone defense in 2020 after spending the 2019 season as a student assistant.
In Payne's first two seasons on staff, the Cyclones appeared in a pair of bowl games: 2019 (Camping World Bowl) and 2020 (PlayStation Fiesta Bowl).
The Cyclones ranked second in the Big 12 in both scoring defense (21.4) and total defense (340.4) in 2020, as the Cyclones finished the regular season in first place in the Big 12 standings, made the Big 12 Championship game and qualified for a New Year’s Six bowl for the first time in school history.
The Cyclones capped off the season with a 34-17 win over Oregon in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.
ISU’s eight conferences wins and nine overall wins eclipsed or tied school records, and the Cyclones earned their highest ranking in school history during the season (#6) and postseason (#9).
Payne was a star in Iowa State’s secondary from 2016-18, starting 31 games while racking up 130 tackles, 13.0 TFL, 14 pass breakups and two interceptions in his outstanding Cyclone career.
The Cyclones made bowl games and won eight games in each of his last two seasons, earning Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades in 2017 with 48 tackles and 6.0 TFL. Payne won the 2016 Dury Moss Award as the team’s top newcomer and participated in the 2019 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl after his career ended.
The Washington, D.C., native is a 2017 graduate of Iowa State.
