Jon Shaeffer is in his first season as chief of staff for the Iowa State football program, continuing his 13-year association with head coach Jimmy Rogers.
In his role, Shaeffer is the athletics department liaison for the football program. He assists Rogers with off-field tasks and many other facets of the program, including scheduling and travel logistics.
Shaeffer’s association with Rogers began in 2013 at South Dakota State where the Sioux Falls native served as a student assistant for the Jackrabbits’ football program.
He joins the Cyclones after spending the 2025 season at Washington State as Rogers’ chief of staff. The Cougars went 6-6, reaching a bowl game despite having a roster that featured 75 newcomers.
Prior to his time in Pullman, Shaeffer spent 12 years at South Dakota State, the last five of which he served as director of football operations and on-campus recruiting. He also held roles of recruiting assistant, special teams quality control, video coordinator and player personnel intern during his time in Brookings.
While on the staff at SDSU, Shaeffer saw the Jackrabbits win back-to-back national championships in 2022 and 2023, while reaching the FCS Playoffs all 12 seasons. South Dakota State advanced to the semifinals or better seven times during Shaeffer’s tenure.
He was a student manager and coach from 2013-16, primarily working with the defensive scout team and assisting with film evaluation of opponents and recruits. He served also served as a student manager for the Jackrabbit baseball team for two seasons (2015-16).
Shaeffer earned his bachelor’s degree in sport, recreation and park management with minors in management and recreation administration from South Dakota State in 2016. He received his master’s degree in sport and recreation administration from SDSU in 2019.
After his graduation from SDSU in the spring of 2016, he spent the next fall at Augustana University in Sioux Falls and assisted with the Vikings’ social media efforts. He also completed player personnel internships at SDSU and with the Sioux Falls Storm indoor football team.
