Pete Menage is in his first season coaching safeties at Iowa State.
Menage was on Iowa State head coach Jimmy Rogers’ staff at both Washington State and South Dakota State.
In 2025, Washington State went 7-6 and won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl despite a roster that featured 75 newcomers at the start of the season.
The Cougars’ defensive unit, of which Menage led the safeties, allowed just 20.2 points per game, including just 12.7 points over the course of the season’s final regular season eight games.
WSU ranked 13th nationally in passing defense, allowing just 174.4 yards through the air. The defense gave up just 299.5 yards of total defense to rank among the nation’s top 15 teams.
Menage was also in charge of the safeties at South Dakota State where the team won the 2023 FCS National Championship and reached the semifinals in 2024.
His two-year stint with the Jackrabbits saw his safety group make 14 interceptions, while the entire defense led the nation in scoring defense both seasons.
Safety Tucker Large, who followed Rogers and Menage to Washington State, was an All-American in 2024, while Matthew Durrance and Colby Huerter joined him on All-Missouri Valley Football Conference teams.
A native of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Menage has spent time at Winona State (2022) and Northern Illinois (2020-21) as well.
At Northern Illinois, the 2021 team was MAC West Division champions, MAC Champions and made an appearance in the Cure Bowl. Safety C.J. Brown earned All-MAC first-team honors and linebacker Lance Deveaux was on the third team. Another of his safeties, Devin Lafayette, was a third-team pick in 2020.
He was a football student-athlete at South Dakota State for two seasons (2016-17) before moving into a student assistant role for his final two years of school (2018-19). He was a member of the SDSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Football Player Council.
His cousin, Jake, is also on the Cyclone coaching staff as an assistant wide receivers coach.
Menage earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in health education from South Dakota State in 2020. He earned a master’s degree in sport management from Northern Illinois in 2021.
