Completed Event: Football versus #17 Kansas State on August 23, 2025 , Win , 24, to, 21

Trever Ryen is in his sixth season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for Iowa State football.
The 2024 Iowa State football team posted the best season in school history, finishing 11-3 overall as it won double-digit games for the first time. ISU advanced to the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship game and went on to finish the season winning the Pop-Tarts Bowl with a thrilling 42-41 victory over No. 15 Miami.
Wide receiver Jayden Higgins was named an All-American and 15 players earned All-Big 12 recognition, including five on the first or second teams.
ISU's work in the offseason paid off as it outscored opponents 225-127 in the second half and 139-58 in the fourth quarter alone on its way to the record-setting season.
In his first season back in Ames, Iowa State finished the 2020 regular season in first place in the Big 12 standings, made the Big 12 Championship game and qualified for a New Year’s Six bowl for the first time in school history.
The Cyclones capped off the season with a 34-17 win over Oregon in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.Â
ISU’s eight conference wins and nine overall wins eclipsed or tied school records, and the Cyclones earned their highest ranking in school history during the season (#6) and postseason (#9).
In 2021, ISU earned its school-record fifth-straight bowl berth with an invitation to the Cheez-It Bowl.Â
Three Cyclones were drafted off the 2022 squad, including defensive end Will McDonald IV, who was Iowa State's first opening-round selection in 50 years. Wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson and Anthony Johnson Jr. were also selected, running the number of draft picks Ryen has worked with to eight players.
The 2023 Cyclones returned to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and finished the season 7-6 overall and 6-3 in Big 12 play despite having one of the nation's youngest rosters. Iowa State's conference improvement (+5 wins) was the largest improvement among Power-5 schools.
Iowa State had multiple players earn Big 12 recognition, led by Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year Rocco Becht. Cornerback T.J. Tampa was an All-Big 12 and All-America honoree, while safeties Jeremiah Cooper and Beau Freyler joined wide receiver Jaylin Noel and tight end Stevo Klotz also earned all-league accolades.
One of the greatest walk-on success stories in Iowa State football history, Ryen was an assistant strength and conditioning coach for Pittsburgh football in 2019, helping the Panthers finish 8-5 and claim a victory over Eastern Michigan in the Quick Lane Bowl.
After graduating from Iowa State in 2017, Ryen worked briefly for the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football (AAF) and was a strength and conditioning intern at Bowling Green in 2018.
Ryen walked-on the Cyclone football program in 2014 and worked his way into one of the Big 12’s best punt returners and wide receivers when his career ended after the 2017 season.
As a sophomore in 2015, Ryen was one of eight players in FBS to record a touchdown by rush, catch and punt return. He was a First-Team All-Big 12 punt returner (ESPN) in his junior season in 2016, averaging 16.5 yards per return, the third-best average in school history, and led the Big 12 with six punt returns of 25 yards or longer. He was a semifinalist for the Burlsworth Trophy for the nation’s best walk-on and was a member of the Paul Hornung Award watch list.
Ryen was an Honorable Mention All-Big 12 selection as a senior in 2017, ranking third in the Big 12 and 20th nationally in punt returns, and caught 47 passes for 469 yards. The Cyclones won eight games and closed out the season with a victory vs. Memphis in the Liberty Bowl.
Ryen, who was also a sprinter on the Iowa State track & field team, ended his Cyclone career with 102 receptions, 1,048 receiving yards and the fourth-best career punt return average (13.37) in school history.
Ryen and his wife, Bailie, have a daughter, Ziyah.Â
