Completed Event: Football versus #17 Kansas State on August 23, 2025 , Win , 24, to, 21

Tyson Veidt completed eight seasons at Iowa State where he served as associate head coach/linebackers coach from 2016-2023.
Veidt’s work with the Cyclone linebackers in his tenure was instrumental in the success of the defensive unit. Behind his leadership, nine Cyclone linebackers earned All-Big 12 recognition a total of 18 times, helping the Cyclones achieve unprecedented success on the gridiron.
Three times in Veidt’s Cyclone career all three starting linebackers received All-Big 12 accolades (2017, 2018, 2019).
The Cyclones qualified for bowl games six of his seven seasons, regularly appeared in the national rankings, and totaled six of ISU’s seven above-.500 seasons in the history of the Big 12 Conference (1996-present) since 2017.
The success of Veidt’s linebackers aided Iowa State in ranking second (20.9- 2017), first (22.9- 2018), third (25.9- 2019), second (21.4- 2020), third (20.5, 2021), first (20.2, 2022) and third (22.8, 2023) in the Big 12 in scoring defense in each of the last seven seasons, all totals among the top-50 nationally.
ISU’s total defense numbers have been just as stout. ISU led the Big 12 Conference in 2021 (310.5) and 2022 (285.6), while ranking second in the league in 2018 (349.2), 2020 (340.4) and 2023 (363.2). The Cyclones’ 2022 defensive effort ranked fourth nationally.
Iowa State’s 2022 defensive unit became just the third in Big 12 history to lead the league in scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense (107.3) and passing defense (178.2).
The 2020 season was historic in many ways. Iowa State finished the regular season in first place in the Big 12 standings, made the Big 12 Championship game and qualified for a New Year’s Six bowl for the first time in school history.
The Cyclones capped off the season with a 34-17 win over Oregon in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.
ISU’s eight conferences wins and nine overall wins eclipsed or tied school records, and the Cyclones earned their highest ranking in school history during the season (#6) and postseason (#9).
ISU had one of the best rush defenses in the country in 2020, limiting opponents to just 103.1 rushing yards per game to lead the Big 12 and rank eighth nationally.
Veidt has coached two All-American linebackers in Ames in Joel Lanning (2017) and Mike Rose (2020).
Perhaps Veidt’s biggest accomplishment was in 2017 in transforming Lanning into a First Team All-American linebacker. Lanning, who hadn’t played linebacker since eighth grade, was a quarterback in his first four seasons as a Cyclone before switching over to linebacker in his final season.
Lanning became a national story with his outstanding play at linebacker and incredible versatility, ranking third in the Big 12 in tackles (8.8) and recording 11.0 TFL and 6.0 sacks. Lanning had a 20-tackle game vs. Texas, the fifth-best FBS total of the season and the ninth-best single-game total in the Iowa State record book.
Veidt was as a finalist for the Broyles Award and the Linebackers Coach of the Year by FootballScoop in 2017.
In 2020, Rose emerged as one of the nation’s best linebackers, earning All-America honors from The Athletic, AP and Sporting News. Rose was the 2020 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, leading the Big 12 in tackles (96) and interceptions (5).
A two-time First Team All-Big 12 choice (2020, 2021), Rose ended his career with 321 tackles and the second-most TFL (41.0) in school history.
Veidt also mentored Marcel Spears Jr., Willie Harvey, Jake Hummel and O’Rien Vance to great careers as Cyclones. Spears Jr. was a three-time All-Big 12 selection (2017-19) who recorded 272 tackles and 24.5 TFL in his career.
Harvey preceded Spears as a three-time All-Big 12 choice (2016-18) and made the Cleveland Browns 53-man roster in 2019 and 2021.
Hummel was a two-time All-Big 12 performer who played in the most career games in Iowa State history (63). He was an undrafted free agent and made his NFL debut with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022.
Vance earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors twice and finished his career 10th in school history with 13.5 sacks and ninth with 32.0 tackles for a loss.
In 2023, Veidt mentored Gerry Vaughn to All-Big 12 honorable mention honors after the sixth-year senior notched 46 tackles and an interception in 11 games. Vaughn tied Hummel for the ISU career record with 63 career games played. True freshman linebacker Jack Sadowsky started all 13 games and earned votes as the league's defensive freshman of the year.
At Toledo, linebacker Chase Murdock led the Rockets in 2015 with 78 tackles and posted 7.5 TFL, as UT won nine games and earned a bowl bid. The Rockets ranked No. 11 nationally in rushing defense, holding opponents to a mere 115.5 yards per game on the ground.
In his first season at UT in 2014, Veidt mentored seniors Junior Sylvestre and Ray Bush, who were the centerpiece of a defense that led the MAC in rushing defense with 116.2 yards allowed per game. Sylvestre earned first-team All-MAC honors and is currently a member of the Indianapolis Colts.
Veidt formerly served as the head coach at Bluffton University (OH) from 2008-13. He made great strides in his six seasons at Bluffton. He rebuilt a program that finished with a 1-9 record in 2007 and led it to a 5-5 mark in 2011 and 6-4 record in 2012, including 5-3 ledgers in league play both seasons and a top-10 ranking nationally. The Beavers broke or established 40 school records during this time. Veidt also directed Bluffton to four straight wins over rival Defiance College. The Beavers placed a record number of student-athletes on the all-conference team during Veidt’s tenure.
Veidt’s teams excelled in the classroom, as well. The Bluffton football team recorded the highest GPA in school history, as well as placing a record number of football players on the Dean’s List. Senior offensive lineman Thomas Gingrich was named CoSIDA Academic All-America in 2012, the first football player in Bluffton history to receive that honor.
Veidt attended Muskingum College where he was a two-year starter on the football team, earning three letters from 1994-96. He received Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors on three occasions. During the 1997 and 1998 campaigns, the Logan, Ohio, native was a graduate assistant at Muskingum where he worked for head coach Jeff Heacock.
Vedit served as a graduate assistant at Indiana before returning to his alma mater to serve as defensive coordinator, a position he held from 2000-03. He then worked for two seasons as a defensive GA at West Virginia under head coach Rich Rodriguez. Veidt was a part of the 2004 and 2005 Big East Champion teams, a 2004 Gator Bowl appearance and a 2006 Sugar Bowl win. Veidt then moved on to coach two seasons at Saint Vincent (PA) College, where he was the defensive coordinator, prior to accepting the Bluffton head position in 2008.
Veidt graduated cum laude from Muskingum in 1996 with a degree in pre-physical therapy and a master’s degree in athletic coaching education from WVU in 2005.
Veidt and his wife, Mandy, have a son, Teddy, and twin girls, Lamonica and Guiliana.
