Connor Murrell completed his first season as a graduate assistant on T.J. Otzelberger’s staff. In his position, Murrell is responsible for assisting staff with video editing, scouting and player development.
Murrell helped the Cyclones to become one of the most improved teams in college basketball history as they went from two wins the season before to a 22-13 record and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2021-22. ISU defeated five nationally-ranked opponents during the season.
The Cyclones did it with an impressive defensive effort, finishing fifth nationally in defensive efficiency and 22nd in scoring defense (62.5), while holding opponents to a school-record low 3-point field goal percentage (28.9).
Izaiah Brockington was the only player in the Big 12 to rank among the league's top four in scoring and rebounding on his way to being named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and an All-Big 12 First Team pick. Tyrese Hunter broke the school record for assists (172) and steals (71) by a freshman and was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
Murrell, a Sioux City, Iowa, native, came to Iowa State after spending the 2020-21 season in the same role at his alma mater, Ohio University. At Ohio, Murrell trained Bobcat players as the team reached the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 with a first-round win against Virginia.
Ohio finished fifth in the Mid-American Conference but rolled through the teams that finished first, second and third in the regular season to reach the NCAA Tournament. Murrell helped train five Bobcats that earned All-MAC honors, including first-team selection Jason Preston.
Murrell also assisted in video analysis and scouting to ensure quick transitions between games. He was vital in the logistical operations of coordinating transportation, food and hotel accommodations during road trips.
Prior to coaching at Ohio, Murrell was a student-athlete for the Bobcats for two seasons. He played in 39 games in two seasons and was on the dean’s list multiple times during his career.
Murrell attended Minnesota State University, Mankato and redshirted for a season after a standout prep career at Sioux City East. Following his redshirt season, he transferred to Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, where he helped lead the Warriors to a 33-1 record, including a conference championship and a No. 1 overall seed in the national tournament.
He earned his degree in marketing from Ohio in 2020.
