David Hobbs, formerly a head coach at Alabama with 30 years of experience as a coach at the collegiate level, has spent four seasons as special assistant to the head coach at Iowa State.

Hobbs led the Crimson Tide program when Steve Prohm was a manager at the school. He has coached on staffs that have won 643 games and made 22 NCAA Tournament appearances.

The 2018-19 Cyclones went 23-12 and won the Big 12 Conference tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in his first three seasons in Ames. Four Cyclones were recognized by the league, led by Marial Shayok being named an All-Big 12 First-Team selection and an All-American by the Associated Press. Shayok also was a finalist for the Julius Erving Award after leading Iowa State's offense with 18.7 points per game.

The Cyclone offensive attack ranked ninth nationally, putting them inside the top-15 for the second time in his first three seasons.

In his first season on the bench in Ames in 2016-17, the Cyclones went 24-11, finished in a tie for second place in the Big 12 Conference, won the conference tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The Cyclones ranked among the top 45 in both adjusted offense (11) and defense (42) in 2016-17, Hobbs' first season. Iowa State's defense had its best season in over a decade, averaging 7.9 steals per game, which ranked 29th nationally.

Individually, Monté Morris earned All-America honors after a stellar senior season. Crediting Hobbs for his improved mechanics, Morris connected on a career-best 54 three-pointers while shooting 37.8 percent behind the arc. Deonte Burton, Nazareth Mitrou-Long and Matt Thomas also earned All-Big 12 honors in 2017.

The Cyclones followed that season by winning three games against top-25 opponents, including an 18-point win against Texas Tech that was the largest by a Cyclone squad in school history against a top-10 foe. Three Cyclones earned recognition from the Big 12 in his second season.

Hobbs served as head coach at Alabama from 1992-98 following a seven-year stint as an assistant coach at the school. He posted a 110-76 record in his six seasons leading the program, the third-best win total behind only Kentucky and Arkansas who combined to win three national titles in that time.

Hobbs has a vast history of recruiting and developing talent, helping to send 22 of his players to the NBA. At Alabama, he coached four NBA first-round picks including Antonio McDyess, who was the second overall selection in the 1995 draft following his sophomore year.

Following his stint in Tuscaloosa, Hobbs served as an assistant and associate head coach on Tubby Smith’s staff at Kentucky. The Wildcats won the SEC regular season and tournament titles four of his seven seasons, making the NCAA Tournament every season. They advanced to the Elite Eight twice and the Sweet 16 in two other seasons.

Hobbs has worked at the NBA level, serving as a scout for the Charlotte Bobcats, Brooklyn Nets and most recently the Utah Jazz.

In 2009, he took a leave from the scouting business to serve as head coach of the Japanese National Basketball team, leading it to a second-place finish in the Southeast Asia Cup. Japan also defeated the Chinese National Team for the first time in several years under his guidance.

As an assistant at Alabama, Hobbs worked under long-time coach Wimp Sanderson. He was also an assistant coach at his alma mater, VCU, from 1979-85.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from VCU in 1972.

He is married to Barbara. The couple has two adult children, Heather and David, Jr.
