Ames native Megan Kerns, a former All-American forward at Florida, returned to the Iowa State coaching staff in 2014 as an assistant coach. Kerns previously coached for the Cyclones in 2009 and 2013 as a volunteer assistant coach. Kerns has helped lift the program's offensive profile during her tenure at ISU, mentoring the Cyclone forwards.
In 2018, Kerns' work coaching ISU's young front line was noticed, helping sophomore Kassi Ginther shine during a breakout season. Working with Kerns, Ginther tied for the Big 12 lead with four goals in conference play, including a crucial strike in Iowa State's 2-0 win at Oklahoma State. The win helped punch the Cyclones' ticket to their second Big 12 Championship in three years.
Coaching the 2016 Cyclones to perhaps the finest season in school history helped show the value Kerns brings to the Iowa State coaching staff. ISU went 10-8-1 in 2016, including two top-25 road wins, a feat that had been accomplished just once before in school history. The Cyclones finished the year No. 48 in the final RPI rankings, the best mark in program history, climbing 150 spots from their No. 198 finish in 2015. Iowa State’s jump of 150 spots was the second-biggest improvement among top-50 teams.
Kerns, who has coached for the Iowa Rush Soccer Club and Ames High since her previous stint with Iowa State, played just one year of high school soccer and amassed an impressive career during her time with the University of Florida soccer team from 2005-08. Kerns was a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Freshman team in 2005 and continued to rack up accolades over the next four years. During her senior year, Kerns was named to the All-SEC First Team, selected as a SoccerBuzz.com third-team All-American, gained All-Southeast Regional honors and was named to the SEC All-Tournament team.
Kerns finished her career with the Gators at the NCAA Championship in the round of 16 and led the team in points (35), goals (13), game-winning goals (five) and was tied for first in assists (nine) during her senior campaign. She ended her collegiate career ranked eighth on Florida’s career points list with 62 and also garnered numerous academic accolades, including being a 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar second-team selection and a NSCAA Academic All-American.
