James Hutchins joined Iowa State University in May 2026 as a senior strength and conditioning coach in support of the women’s soccer program.
He comes to Ames after one year in Major League Soccer where he worked as the Lead Academy Physical Development Coach at FC Cincinnati, while also assisting with the second team.
Previously, he was an assistant sports performance coach as Kennesaw State where he oversaw the baseball, volleyball, and track and field teams. He also assisted with women’s soccer and supported staff development by creating and overseeing the internship program.
Prior to Kennesaw State, he held a graduate assistant position at Illinois State University and worked with a multitude of teams. James started his career working in professional soccer in England with the Cippenham Town FC Academy program.
The Chippenham, England native earned a master’s degree in biomechanics from Illinois State and both a master’s degree in strength and conditioning and bachelor’s degree in sport and exercise science from Coventry University (UK). He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the NSCA and a Level 1 Weightlifting Coach from USA Weightlifting.
He resides in Ames with his wife, Chloe.
