Sara Vergote joined Iowa State as an assistant track coach in the fall of 2012. Before coming to Iowa State, Vergote was the associate head coach at Toledo. Vergote, a Toledo graduate who is one of the top runners in Mid-American Conference history, also served previously as a distance coach at Manhattan College.
Vergote coached a Toledo women's cross country team that qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships the past two seasons, placing 21st in 2010 and 28th in 2011.
Vergote spent three years as the men's and women's cross country/distance coach at Manhattan College. During her time with the Jaspers, the women's cross country program experienced improvements, including going from fourth at the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships to the runner-up spot in 2007. On the track, the men's and women's distance runners saw great improvements as well, with nearly all of her athletes achieving lifetime personal records as the Jaspers won three straight men's and women's indoor and outdoor MAAC titles.
Vergote, a five-time co-captain of the UT women's cross country and track teams, was the first associate head coach of the cross country and track and field programs for the 2011-2012 seasons. In total, it was her fourth season as a coach for the Rockets.
Vergote was a member of three nationally ranked UT cross country teams from 2000-2002. The Rockets won the Mid-American Conference Championship in 2001 and 2002 with Vergote finishing as MAC runner-up in 2002. Vergote was a two-time NCAA Qualifier and MAC 10K champion in 2003. She is a member of the University of Toledo Athletic Hall of Fame and is still ranked as one of the top all-time best runners in MAC history in the 3000-meter steeplechase and 10K.
Vergote graduated from the University of Toledo with a bachelor's of science in education and biology. She also has a master's degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts and served as an intern in the compliance office at Ohio University for one year before coaching at Manhattan.
