Derek Burton, former head coach at Missouri Valley College, joined the Iowa State soccer staff as an assistant coach in June 2006.
The St. Louis native owned a 54-28-7 record at Missouri Valley and coached 22 all-conference, seven all-region, four All-Americans and 12 All-America Scholar-Athletes in his five years. He was the 2002 Heart of America Conference Coach of the Year, leading the team to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Region V playoffs.
Before his stint at Missouri Valley, Burton served one season as the head women’s and assistant men’s soccer coach at Mount Senario College, leading the school to a No. 10 seed in the NAIA National Tournament. Burton then took a position as the assistant women’s soccer coach at Morehead (Ky.) State University in Kentucky, where he helped establish the varsity program. In just three years with the Eagles, Burton more than tripled the program’s winning percentage.
Prior to MSU, he was an assistant at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, his alma mater, for one season following his collegiate playing career. In 1998, Burton was drafted to play professionally by the Pensacola Flyers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League.
While a player at UALR, he was team captain for his junior and senior seasons and led the team to the Sun Belt Conference Championship game twice.
Burton earned a bachelor’s degree in health education from Arkansas-Little Rock in 1997. He received a master’s degree in sports administration from Morehead State in 1999. Burton is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and holds a United States Soccer Federation "B" License. Burton and his wife Jacqueline have a daughter, Fiona.
