Kurt Backes capped off his IowaState wrestling career in 2007 with an NCAA runner-up finish at 197 pounds. The Neshanic Station, N.J., native finished his Cyclone career with a 109-31 record, tying Al Nacin (1971-75) on the all-time ISU win chart. He was a four-time NCAA qualifier, who earned All-America honors in 2004. In 2006, Backes won a Big 12 Conference title at 184 pounds and was named league wrestler of the week on two occasions. At the 2007 Veterans National Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., Backes placed fifth in freestyle at 96 kg.
Backes graduated in 2007 from IowaState with a bachelor’s degree in finance.
