AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team lost to intrastate rival Northern Iowa, 0-3 Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones top performer was Stacy Nicks, who ended the contest with 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks. With the loss, ISU moves to 2-14 on the season and remains at 0-8 in Big 12 action. Northern Iowa improves its season record to 15-4 and still owns an unblemished Missouri Valley Conference record of 7-0.
"I think we played UNI a lot better than we did last season, especially in games two and three," ISU head coach Linda Grensing said. "One of the real positives that I saw tonight was that at one point when we were down 7-1 the team responded and put together a excellent string of points, and put some pressure on Northern Iowa. What I was happy with in that set and then again in game three, was that the team started to play with some consistency, flow and most importantly heart. Once we are able to put together a full match with that kind of effort, the outcome of the match will be greatly effected."
Along with Nicks' 10 kills and seven digs, ISU's Sarah Rollman helped the Cyclones cause, adding seven kills and six digs of her own. Freshman Julie Mitchell came on strong for ISU in the second game, recording three kills in only five attacks along with two block assists. As a team, Iowa State out hit UNI 113-106, marking only the third time this season that ISU has registered more attacks then its opponents.
UNI's Kim Kester led the way for the Panthers with a match-high 17 kills and six digs. The sophomore from Urbana, Iowa hit .419 from the floor and tallied two aces.
The Cyclones resume Big 12 action this Saturday in Waco, Texas vs. Baylor. First serve for the ISU-BU matchup will be at 7 p.m. in the Ferrell Center.
