AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team lost in straight sets, 15-0, 15-5 and 15-4 to No. 1 Nebraska, Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. The Huskers used a strong offensive attack behind a 12-kill performance from Amber Holmquist to improve their record to 15-0 overall and 7-0 in conference play. With the loss the Cyclones move to 2-13 on the season and 0-8 in Big 12 action.
Despite a rough first game the Cyclones hung tough against the nations top squad, which made ISU head coach Linda Grensing optimistic about ISU future.
"I was really disappointed with the way we opened the match, but in games two and three we did a much better job of making Nebraska work for their points," Grensing said. "Being able to score five and four points on them was fairly good for us considering where Nebraska is right now with its team. A lot of good teams, even ranked teams have falling to Nebraska in similar fashion, so I feel good about how we performed in the later part of today's match. "
The Cyclones were once again led by senior middle blocker Stacy Nicks and sophomore outsider hitter Sarah Rollman, both ended the afternoon with seven kills. Nicks committed only one error in 17 attacks giving her a .400 hitting percentage from the floor. Following close behind Nicks and Rollman was Mandi Harms. The sophomore tallied six kills and notched a team-high six digs.
For the second match this season freshman setter Lindsey Chapman played the entire match. She replaced Sara Stribe, who has been hampered with a hip injury and was forced to sit out today's contest. Chapman registered 20 assists on the day.
The Cyclones will be back in Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday to face intrastate rival Northern Iowa. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
