AMES, Iowa - The No. 24 nationally ranked Texas A&M volleyball team beat ISU, 3-0 Saturday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones hung tough with the Aggies behind a solid performance from sophomore outside hitter Sarah Rollman, but fall to 2-24 overall and 0-17 in Big 12 action. The win improves TAMU's overall record to 16-7 and its conference mark to 11-5.
ISU came out sluggish in game one falling 15-3, but battled back in game two and at one point held a 12-11 edge. Senior Stacy Nicks came up big in stanza two collecting six of her nine kills on the night. Rollman was also a big factor in the Cyclones improved play as she tallied four kills and connected at a .571 clip from the floor. The sophomore ended the night tied with Nicks for the team lead in kills with nine.
Despite Iowa State's enthusiastic run, Texas A&M battled back to win game two 15-12 and carried the momentum over to the final set, winning 15-3.
"I think in game two the team just kind of relaxed and played more like they do in practice," ISU head coach Linda Grensing said. "Our goals tonight were to come out focused, be aggressive and try to play with the emotions and enthusiasm that we show in practice. They were able to do that in game two and it really showed on the score board. We just need to be able to sustain that level of play across a whole match and I think we will be a pretty good team."
Along with her nine kills tonight, Nicks ended the contest hitting a sizzling .474 from the floor. The senior form Spencer, committed zero errors in 19 total attacks. It is her best hitting performance of the season since a .489 outing against Drake on Oct. 14. She also notched five block assists which brings her career total to 256 and ties her for fifth on the ISU all-time career block assists chart with Kari Mitchell.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Wednesday against the No. 1 Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Neb. First serve for the ISU-NU matchup will be at 7 p.m. in the Nebraska Coliseum.
