AMES, Iowa (AP) - Freshman Jake Sullivan hit 5-of-6 3-point shots in scoring 19 points and Iowa State set a school record with its 23rd straight victory at home, beating Southern 94-62 Friday night in the first round of the Cyclone Classic.
Sullivan hit his first three 3-point attempts to keep Iowa State (4-0) ahead through a sloppy first half, and the Cyclones finally took control with a 31-5 run that spanned the two halves.
They'll play Southern Mississippi, an 84-51 winner over Western Illinois, in Saturday night's championship game. Southern (0-3) will play Western Illinois for third place.
Iowa State's last loss at home was to Missouri, 77-61 on Feb. 8, 1999.
Kantrail Horton added 15 points for Iowa State, Jamaal Tinsley had 13 points and 10 assists and Martin Rancik and Tyray Pearson each scored 12.
Devan Clark led Southern with 14 points and Victor Tarver had 12.
Sullivan, 7-for-8 overall from the field, tied the school record for 3-point percentage in a game, a mark shared by Fred Hoiberg, Brian Pearson and Jay Goodman.
Leading just 38-31, Iowa State scored the final five points of the first half, then got rolling after halftime. The Cyclones scored 13 of the first 15 points in the second half to open a 56-33 lead, then hit Southern with an 11-0 burst to make it 69-36. The Jaguars never recovered.
Paul Shirley, 0-for-7 in the first half with an airball on a 5-foot shot, had four baskets during the second-half surge and Tinsley brought the crowd to its feet when he drove the right side of the lane, whipped the ball behind his back and banked in a layup.
Tinsley was fouled on the shot and made the free throw for a 64-36 lead.
Iowa State jumped to a 17-7 lead but still took awhile to put Southern away. Coach Larry Eustachy constantly got on his players for defensive lapses, fumbling passes and getting outhustled for loose balls.
But after Southern outscored Iowa State 7-1 to cut the lead to seven, Tinsley sank two free throws and Brandon Hawkins pulled up for a jump shot in the lane to return the momentum to the Cyclones, who continued it through the second half.
