AMES, Iowa - Consensus first-team All-American Marcus Fizer, who led Iowa State to the NCAA Elite Eight this season for the first time since 1944, has been selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) as the recipient of the inaugural All-Coach.com Pete Newell Award as the outstanding big man in college basketball.
Fizer will receive his award Sunday, April 2, at the annual GTE/NABC Awards Show at the Murat Theater in Indianapolis, Ind. The event is held as part of the annual NABC Convention in conjunction with the NCAA Final Four.
The award is given in honor of Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Pete Newell, renowned for his development of big men in college basketball.
Fizer, a junior who averaged a team-leading 22.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, was the Big 12 scoring leader in each of the last two seasons. He was selected as the Big 12 Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player in the Big 12 Tournament this season.
Fizer helped the Cyclones win a school-record 32 games and their first conference regular-season title since 1945. Iowa State won the conference tournament for the second time in school history. A Cyclone team had not reached the Elite Eight since 1944, when the NCAA Tournament field was just eight teams.
