AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team lost in a hard-fought three-set match, 7-15, 6-15 and 11-15 to Kansas, Saturday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones drop to 2-9 on the season and 0-4 in Big 12 action. With the win, KU evens its conference record at 2-2, and improves overall to 11-2.
Iowa State came out aggressive in game one with five quick points to take the lead, but came up short as KU rallied to come away with a 15-7 opening set win. ISU head coach Linda Grensing was pleased with the quick start, but would like to see that energy last for a whole match.
"I was really pleased with two things in tonight's match," Grensing said. "In that first set we played with some enthusiasm and aggression. That was great, the coaching staff and I had talked with them about getting off to a good start, so I was pleased with how they responded. Secondly, I was really pleased with the way they came back and fought in the third set. The team really showed some poise by coming back after falling behind, 3-10."
In the third set ISU came back to within a point of tieing the match and then fought off several match point attempts by Kansas. Mandi Harms came off the bench in the final set to give ISU a little spark, tallying four kills, two digs and a block.
Senior Stacy Nicks was the was the top offensive threat for ISU, registering 10 kills at a .304 clip. The Spencer native also led Iowa State defensively with two blocks. For Kansas the top performer was Iowa City, Iowa native Amy Myatt. Myatt recorded a team-high 11 kills, 2 digs and a block.
The Cyclones hit the road this week, traveling to Norman Okla., to face the Sooners, Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the OU Fieldhouse.
