NORMAN, Okla. - The Iowa State volleyball team lost in a hard fought five-set match against Oklahoma, Wednesday night in the OU Fieldhouse. The Cyclones led 2-1 after three sets, but came up short in the final two games, falling 2-3. ISU's record drops to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in conference action. With the win, Oklahoma evens its record at 6-6 on the season and 1-3 in Big 12 play.
After dropping the first set 8-15, and falling behind 4-8 in the second game the Cyclones got on a roll, taking the second set, 20-18. They were lead by sophomore Mandi Harms, who tallied five kills in game two and ended the night with a team leading 13 kills. Harms also lead ISU with a .229 hitting percentage and 14 digs.
With the momentum of the second set win ISU came into game three with some much needed confidence, winning by a margin of 15-11. ISU's comeback in game two and then continuing that level of play in game three didn't go unnoticed by ISU head coach Linda Grensing.
"I was really happy with the team in how they came back in game two after falling behind early," Grensing said. "Winning that game gave us some confidence and that really showed in how they performed in game three. In games two and three, we were doing a good job on first contact, which allowed us to run some things offensively that we really haven't been able to do all season"
Along with Harms, fellow sophomore teammate Sarah Rollman had a strong showing, coming away with 11 kills and 6 digs on the night. For Oklahoma, Cathy Cook was the top performer, registering a match-high 27 kills at a .427 clip.
Iowa State will be back in Ames, Saturday to face Colorado at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
