AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team dropped a hard-fought four set match vs. Kansas State, Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum. True Freshman Brittany Dalager collected a career-high 27 digs and a team-high 14 kills on the night. The loss moves ISU's overall mark to 3-10 and drops its conference record to 0-8. KSU's Lisa Mimick drilled a match-high 19 kills to pace the Wildcats and help them improve to 9-5 on the year and to 5-3 in Big 12 action.
Iowa State set a season high with 92 digs in the match, but Kansas State collected 108 digs on the night to go along with its 69 kills. ISU was limited to 50 kills on 205 attacks and a .088 hitting percentage. Middle blocker Julie MItchell had a career night as she hit a personal best .407 form the floor while collecting 12 kills.
In game one, Kansas State jumped out to a 4-0 lead then ran it to 8-2 before Iowa State closed within 9-8 on four-straight points. After a Wildcat timeout, K-State rattled off 12 of the next 14 points, including nine consecutive with the score at 14-10, to take a convincing 23-10 lead. The Cyclones could get no closer than nine points, as the Wildcats won, 30-16. Dalager led ISU in the opening stanza, collecting four kills and eight digs.
The two teams battled back and forth in game two before Iowa State grabbed the lead for the first time with three straight points at 6-4. The Cyclones would maintain the lead and extended it to as many as seven points (20-13) before the Wildcats rallied to tie and take a two-point lead at 26-24. ISU rallied and tied the match before taking the lead for good at 28-27. The Cyclones would earn its first game victory over the Wildcats in more than six years on their first game point, 30-27. Dalager once again was ISU main offensive weapon, collecting seven kills on 16 attacks. Sophomore Steph Suntken chipped in four kills on just eight attacks to help Iowa State snap its 20 game losing streak.
Riding the momentum of game two, Iowa State jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Kansas State rallied to tie it at 8-8 before taking its largest lead at 12-8. However, the Cyclones ran off four-straight points to tie it at 12-all then the two teams battled through six ties and four lead changes before the Wildcats posted four points in a row for a 23-19 advantage. KSU would ride out its lead to claim a 30-24 game two win and a 2-1 match advantage.
In game four, the two teams continued to battle back and forth with eight lead changes and seven ties before Kansas State ran off three straight points for a 15-12 lead. Iowa State then scored eight of the next nine points for a convincing 20-16 lead. ISU's Mitchell kept the Cyclones in its as she drilled three kills on nine attempts, but KSU was able to outlast the Cyclones, winning the final game, 30-26.
ISU will travel to Boulder, Colo., for a Saturday night contest vs. Colorado. First serve will be at 7 p.m. (CST) in the Coors Events Center.
