Iowa State Volleyball Falls on the Road Against No. 23 Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. - Iowa State volleyball fell at No. 23 Colorado, 0-3 Saturday night in the Coors Event Center. Mandi Harms led ISU on the night, collecting eight kills and five digs. The loss drops the Cyclones to 3-11 overall and to 0-9 in Big 12 action. With the win Colorado improves to 11-4 on the year and to 6-2 in league play.
Colorado started fast and ended fast in the opening stanza, opening up a early 7-2 advantage. CU pushed its lead to 11-3, forcing ISU head coach Linda Crum to call a timeout. The Buffaloes would continue to keep the pressure on and eventually increased their led to 22-9 before taking their biggest advantage in the game on the final point to claim game one, 30-12. ISU was limited to eight kills on 38 attempts, while CU drilled 19 and committed just three hitting errors. Renae Pruess and Mandi Harms led ISU offensively in set one collecting three kills apiece.
Game two continued where game one left off, as Colorado jumped out an early lead and never looked back. CU scored the first point and ISU countered to tie the match 1-1. The Buffaloes would then string together 13-straight points to take a 14-1 advantage. CU's Sara Fredrickson served 12 consecutive points in that string, until ISU's Sara Stribe was able to snap that scoring spree with a quick dump over the net. Colorado then slowly expanded its lead throughout the remainder of the game, eventually claiming a 2-0 match lead with a 30-11 game two victory.
Game three proved to be more competitive as ISU kept the game closer in the early stages. The two conference foes traded points early, until CU was able to build a slight edge. This time the Cyclones fought back and at one point cut CU's advantage to one at 12-11. Despite a valiant effort from ISU, the Buffs held on to its lead and eventually closed out the final set, 30-25. ISU didn't go easy, as they fought off three-straight match points, but CU's Monique Gerlach closed out the match with her fifth kill of the contest.
ISU returns home to host Oklahoma on Wednesday. First serve will be at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
