AUSTIN, Texas - The Iowa State volleyball team fell in three sets at Texas Saturday in Gregory Gym. Offensively, the Cyclones were paced by Mandi Harms and Steph Suntken, who tallied 11 and 10 kills, respectively. The loss moves ISU overall record to 4-12 and to 1-10 in Big 12 action. Bethany Howden's 17-kill performance on the day helped the Longhorns improve to 12-7 overall and to 6-5 in league play.
UT tallied 56 kills to ISU's 44 and outdug the Cyclones 49-35. The Longhorns hit .283 for the floor, while ISU was limited to a .163 hitting percentage.
The Longhorns edged the Cyclones in game one 36-34, marking the longest game this season for ISU. Texas took a four-point lead at 14-10 but the Cyclones battled back to tie the match. After exchanging points, Texas managed to pull ahead by four points at 25-21 when Iowa State called a timeout. The Cyclones then went on a five-point run to take its first lead 26-25. A service error by Iowa State made the score 26-26 and Texas took the lead 27-26 on a block assist by Kathryn Wilson and LaTonya Coates. Back-to-back service errors gave Texas the lead at 28-27 before another block assist set the Longhorns up with a game-point opportunity. An attack error by Gipy Duarte tied the match at 29-29. Iowa State's Brittany Dalager recorded a kill and an attack error by Topic gave the Cyclones the lead 31-30. Texas battled back to take the lead and finally converted on their sixth game-point opportunity on an Iowa State attack error.
After an early 1-1 tie in game two, the Longhorns moved out to a comfortable eight-point lead at 26-18. Despite a small run after an Iowa State timeout, Texas maintained its lead to win 30-25.
The Longhorns jumped to an early 7-3 lead in game three but the Cyclones clawed back with four-consecutive points to make the score 7-7. Iowa State took the lead midway through game three, leading by as many as five (21-16). Texas pulled within two points at 22-20, forcing Iowa State to call a timeout. The Longhorns answered with two kills by Topic and one kill by senior outside hitter Katia Lara to tie the game at 23-23. Following to more ties, the Longhorns took the lead for good on three consecutive kills to win the match 30-27.
ISU will remain on the road for its next contest as they travel to Waco, Texas to face the Bears on Wednesday. First serve will be at 7 p.m.
