WACO, Texas - Iowa State volleyball fell at Baylor, 3-0, Wednesday night in the Ferrell Center. Brittany Dalager and Mandi Harms both collected double-doubles in the loss. Dalager collected 10 kills and 15 digs, while Harms registered 13 kills and 11 digs. The loss drops the Cyclones to 4-13 overall and to 1-11 in Big 12 action. With the win BU improves to 14-6 and to 5-6 in league play.
In game one the Cyclones scored two quick points to take an early 2-0 advantage. The Bears erased ISU's lead and took a lead of its own, scoring six-straight points until middle blocker Julie Mitchell broke BU's scoring spree with a tip over the net. Baylor slowly widened its advantage and took its largest lead of the set at 15-8, forcing ISU head coach Linda Crum to utilize a time out. The Cyclones cut BU's lead to 15-17, but the Bears responded and had match point following long rally. ISU fought off four match points until a blocking error by Sara Stribe gave Baylor its winning margin of 30-25. Dalager and Julie Mtichell led ISU in the opening stanza, tallying four kills apiece.
Baylor scored the first point in game two, but ISU quickly responded tying the match at 3-3 and then after trading points, ISU built a 7-4 advantage. A kill by Mitchell gave the Cyclones a 15-11 lead halfway through the second game. The Bears slowly chipped away at the Cyclones lead and eventually tied the match, 20-20. A service error by BU gave the Cyclones the lead back, but Baylor tied the match once again and then jumped on top behind a Tisha Schwartz block at 22-21. The game turned into a seesaw battle, as the match was tied three more times, before Dana Chuha dumped a set over the net to give BU game two, 30-27 and a 2-0 match lead heading into the locker room.
Game three opened in similar fashion as the first two, as ISU took an early lead and BU came back to tie the match. Unlike in game one and two neither team was able to build a significant advantage. The Cyclones did take control of the match and held a 16-13 lead until the Bears fought back and once again knotted the match at 19-19. The two conference foes traded points, but Baylor slowly took control of the match and held match point at 29-22. For the second time on the night Chuha notched the game winning point on a dump on the net. Chuha's fourth kill of the match gave to Bears game three, 30-22 and the match.
ISU returns home to host Colorado on Saturday. First serve will be at 2 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
