CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball squad fell in three sets to intrastate rival and No. 18 nationally ranked Northern Iowa Tuesday night in front a sellout crowd in the West Gym. Brittany Dalager and Mandi Harms both pounded seven kills and combined for 10 digs to lead the Cyclones on the on the night. The loss moves ISU's overall record to 4-19, while Northern Iowa improves to 25-1.
Northern Iowa jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and then extended it to a 6-1 margin in the early going of game one. ISU's Brittany Dalager drilled back-to-back kills to get the Cyclone back in the game and then kills by Sara Stribe and Julie Mitchell cut the Panthers lead to, 6-5. Behind four straight serves of Molly O'Brien, UNI has able to fend off Iowa State's comeback and rebuilt its advantage to 11-6. Northern Iowa then slowly widened its lead throughout the midpoint of the opening stanza and at one point held a 16-9 lead. The Cyclones once again clawed back into the match as Harms drilled one of her three kills in the game and then served four straight points to bring the match within two at 14-16. The Panthers were able counter ISU's comeback threat once again, scoring six-straight points, to take a commanding 22-14 lead and then held on to claim the opening set, 30-19. Dalager led the Iowa State attack registering four kills on 11 attempts.
Game two started in similar fashion as the opening set, as UNI jumped out to a 8-2 advantage. Iowa State scored three straight points to cut the Panthers led to 10-5, but Northern Iowa kept the pressure on building a 24-11 advantage. The Cyclones were able to hold off the Panthers on two match points but a tip over the net by Jill Arganbright gave UNI the game 30-20. Harms paced ISU in game two with three kills on six attacks and also registered an assist and a dig.
The two squads battled back and forth in the third game, with neither team able to secure a sizeable lead. UNI scored the first point, but ISU was able to tie the match at 4-4. The Panthers then built a 10-8 lead, before taking control of the match. Northern Iowa extended its margin to 25-14 and held a 29-17 edge late in the match. The Cyclones staved off three match points, behind kills from Dalager and Harms and then a block by Dalager and Steph Suntken cut UNI's lead to 20-29. The Panther were able to secure the match on the next point winning game three 30-20.
Iowa State resumes Big 12 action on Saturday vs. Texas Tech in Carroll, Iowa. The match will begin at 2 p.m. in the Carroll high school gymnasium.
