CARROLL, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team fell in three sets vs. Texas Tech, Saturday afternoon in the Carroll high school Gymnasium. The Cyclones nearly pulled out game one but fell, 34-36 and then dropped games two and three 22-30 and 19-30, respectively. Brittany Dalager paced ISU with a team-high 11 kills and came just two digs shy of her ninth double-double of the season, finishing the afternoon with eight digs. The loss drops ISU to 4-20 overall and to 1-17 in Big 12 action. TTU's Kelly Johnson pounded a match-high 20 kills to help the Red Raiders improve to 17-11 on the year and to 8-9 in conference play.
Texas Tech held a 70-45 advantage in kills and outhit the Cyclones .374 to .233. Iowa State's .233 hitting percentage was the best team performance since hitting at a .200 clip in the season opener vs. Western Illinois. Defensively, ISU outblocked TTU six to two, but the Red Raiders held 60-38 edge in digs.
Game one proved to be the mostly hotly contest game of the match as both Big 12 squads fought off several match points, but the Red Raiders eventually prevailed, 36-34. ISU and TTU traded points and the lead through the game, with neither team able to sustain an sizeable advantage. In what turned out to be the longest game of its season, Iowa State hit an impressive .306 from the floor, while pounding 20 kills and committing just five hitting errors. Unfortunately for the Cyclones, TTU finished with a .404 hitting percentage, collecting 29 kills on 52 attacks and committing just eight hitting errors. Mandi Harms led the ISU charge in the opening stanza with five kills.
Texas Tech utilized the momentum they gained in a big game one victory to jump ahead of ISU early in game two. The Cyclones battled back be were unable to overcome another strong offensive game by the Red Raiders, dropping game two 22-30. Dalager was the heart of ISU's offensive attack in the second set, finishing with five of her final 11 kills, while hitting .364 for the floor. She committed just one hitting error on 11 attempts. Heather Hughes-Justice pounded seven kills for the Red Raiders, who hit .360 as a team in the second stanza.
TTU was able to keep its offense rolling in the final game, as it pounded 19 kills on 37 attacks and committed just one hitting error. ISU battled early but eventually fell 19-30. Harms and Dalager combined for eight kills in game three, while Dana Koziol led ISU defensively with three of her final team-high 10 digs.
Iowa State travels to Norman , Okla., for a mid week match vs. the Sooners. First serve for the Big 12 mathup will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday night in the OU Field House.
