AMES, Iowa (AP) - Kansas couldn't do it. Neither could Oklahoma, Oklahoma State or Iowa.
It was left to San Jose State to end Iowa State's long winning streak at Hilton Coliseum.
Only 24 hours after losing to Division II Nebraska-Omaha, San Jose State stunned Iowa State 64-62 Saturday night, ending the Cyclones' 39-game winning streak at home.
"We've had a heck of a run," Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy said. "The last time I walked up those stairs after a loss was when we lost to Missouri and Jamaal Tinsley was sitting in our locker room on his official visit.
"I take full responsibility. I can't seem to get our guys to bring it every day."
Iowa State's last loss at home had been to Missouri, 77-61, on Feb. 8, 1999. The Cyclones lost despite Tyray Pearson's career-high 25 points. He scored 21 in the second half.
"San Jose State did a good job," Pearson said. "They have a very similar game to us. I've got to give them credit, they made the shots down the stretch. Now we have to get back at it in practice."
Phil Calvert led San Jose State (3-4) with 25 points, including a free throw with 15.3 seconds left for the final margin. The Spartans then played tenacious defense to keep Iowa State (4-3) from getting a good shot at the end.
Shane Power fired up a 3-point shot at the buzzer, but he was off balance the ball fell short.
"No excuses," Eustachy said. "They hit the big baskets. We did not deserve to make that shot at the end. We did not deserve to win it."
Pearson scored eight straight points during a three-minute stretch late in the game, the last of those points coming on a free throw that tied it at 52 with 4:40 to play.
He missed his second shot and Calvert put San Jose State ahead to stay with his fifth 3-pointer. Omar Bynum's basket drew Iowa State to 55-54, but Andre Valentine answered with a 3-pointer and Calvert fed Valentine for a basket after making a steal.
That put the Spartans ahead 60-64 with 2:55 remaining, enough of a cushion for them to hold on.
"We had a really tough loss last night and it was really good to see our team respond," said San Jose State coach Steve Barnes, who spent nine years as an assistant to Eustachy.
"We watched film until 1:30 a.m. and it was very positive. We practiced hard for an hour and a half today and did nothing but rebound."
San Jose State had 12 offensive rebounds to five for Iowa State.
Power and Marcus Jefferson each scored 10 points for Iowa State. Jefferson left the game after injuring his ankle with 35 seconds left.
"I'm just very disappointed," Power said. "We had a chance and we didn't get it done."
