KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Big 12 player of the year Jamaal Tinsley scored just eight points before fouling out and No. 7 Iowa State shot 31 percent Friday, helping Baylor jolt the Cyclones 62-49 in the second round of the Big 12 tournament.
DeMarcus Minor scored 23 points for the eighth-seeded Bears (19-10), who lost to Iowa State by 21 points in January.
Playing poorly from the opening tip, the two-time Big 12 champion Cyclones (25-5) had twice as many turnovers (16) as field goals (eight) in a sloppy first half and then missed their first six shots in the second half.
The loss made the Cyclones, who also have the Big 12 coach of the year (Larry Eustachy) and freshman of the year (Jake Sullivan) the first No. 1 seed to lose its opening game in the Big 12 tournament.
Losing to the NIT-hopeful Bears may also have done significant damage to their seeding in the NCAA tournament.
The Cyclones had hoped to be no lower than a No. 2 and come back to Kansas City for the first two rounds. That would have put them before a pro-Iowa State crowd that watched in stunned silence in the final few minutes as their team was completely outplayed by the Bears.
Making Baylor's victory seem even more unlikely, All-Big 12 guard Terry Black was 0-for-8 and scored just one point for the Bears.
The only thing that kept the Bears from taking more than a 10-point halftime lead was almost equally poor shooting on their part. While the Cyclones hit just 8-of-23 from the floor, Baylor was 11-of-26.
The Cyclones appeared to be making a move finally with about five minutes left when Tinsley hit a 3-pointer in a 7-0 run that made it 48-40. But then Minor hit a driving layup and Tinsley fouled out.
Greg Davis had 10 points for Baylor, and Sullivan and Tyray Pearson each had 10 for Iowa State.
