LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Iowa State volleyball team fell at Kansas, 1-3 in the Big 12 season opener, Wednesday night in the Horesjsi Family Athletics Center. Brittany Dalager led ISU offensively with a career-high 17 kills. Junior setter Sara Stribe helped the Cyclone's cause, finishing the match with 45 assists and a team-high 19 digs. The loss evens Iowa State's overall record at 3-3 (0-1), while Kansas improves to a school best start of 10-0 (1-0).
In the opening set KU jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but powered by two kills from freshman Brittany Dalager, the Cyclones were able to tie the score, 3-3. The Jayhawks went on a run and held a 26-16 advantage, forcing ISU head Coach Linda Crum to call her second the out of the game. Kansas would eventually close out the opening stanza, 30-17. Klyie Thomas and Molly Scavuzzo led the Jayhawks, collecting five kills apiece.
With the opening set jitters out of the way the Cyclones would prove to be a much more formidable opponent in the second set. ISU and KU traded points, until Iowa State was able to score back-to-back points and owned a 16-13 advantage. Iowa State maintained its lead until KU tied the match, 23-23. The Cyclones wouldn't surrender their led though as Dalager, who collected three more kills in game two, helped push ISU to a 26-23 advantage. Iowa State would ride its lead out and evened the match at 1-1 with a 30-25 second set win.
The seesaw battle that began in game two would continue into game three, as both squads fought to take a lead. An ace by Stribe, sandwiched between kills by Dalager gave ISU its biggest lead of the game at 20-18. Following a timeout KU scored four-straight points to regain the lead at 22-20, forcing ISU to take a timeout of its own. This time following the break Iowa State put together a run, scoring three-straight points to take the lead. The Jayhawks tied the match at 24-24 and then outscored ISU 6-to-1 to take a 2-1 match lead. Mandi Harms and Dalager led ISU offensively, tallying five kills apiece in game three.
The Jayhawks utilized the momentum they gain in the third set to take control of game four. Early on the game continued to be a back and forth contest, but Kansas, lead by Scavuzzo, who finished with 19 kills on the night, built a 27-20 margin. The Cyclone wouldn't go quietly scoring eight point to cut KU's led to one, but Scavuzzo registered the final point to give KU game four, 30-28 and the match , 3-1.
Iowa State returns home to face No. 25 Texas at 7 p.m., Saturday in Hilton Coliseum.
