AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team fell to No. 16 Texas A&M, 0-3 Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. ISU's Steph Suntken had a solid outing as she finished the match with seven kills and a team-best hitting percentage of .353. The sophomore from Indianola also recorded three digs, two solo blocks and five block assists. The loss moves Iowa State's overall record to 3-6 and to 0-4 in Big 12 action. TAMU's A.D. Achilefu drilled a match-high 13 kills to help the Aggies improve to 10-1 overall and to 3-0 in conference play.
The opening set proved to be a good indication of how the entire match would unfold as both teams traded points in the early stages of game one. Suntken kept the Cyclones in the game, drilling four kills and connecting at a .667 clip from the floor. It wasn't enough though as the Aggies' Michelle Cole pounded six kills on just eight attacks to secure a game-one victory for Texas A&M.
TAMU took a early lead in set two but ISU, led by Mandi Harms' three kills, fought back into the match. TAMU once again though overpowered the Cyclones down the stretch, as Melissa Munsch, Erin Lechler and Achilefu combined for 14 kills to give the Aggies a 2-0 match lead.
Game three would prove to be the most competitive set on the afternoon, as neither team was able to build a sizeable lead. The Aggies eventually built a slight advantage, but Iowa State chipped away and tied the match, 17-17. TAMU responded to the Cyclone comeback scoring back-to-back to points and then kept the pressure on, claiming a hard-fought game three victory, 30-25. Harms led ISU offensively in the final stanza, registering four of her nine kills on the afternoon, while hitting .375 from the floor.
"I thought we came out a were very competitive today," ISU head coach Linda Crum said. "We did a lot of things well, but we just needed a little more to push us over the edge and win some of those close sets. The team did a good job in the fundamentals today, we just came up short at crucial times when we need to score."
Iowa State meets up with Texas Tech, Wednesday night in Lubbock, Texas. First serve will be at 7 p.m.
