GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Iowa State volleyball team defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay, 3-1 in its second match of the Amerihost Classic, Saturday afternoon in the Phoenix Sports Center. True freshman Brittany Dalager recorded her second-straight double-double and the third of her career as she led ISU with 15 kills and 14 digs. The win improved Iowa State to 3-1 on the year, while UWGB falls to 4-1.
Wisconsin-Green Bay opened up an early lead in game one, outscoring the Cyclones 5-1. ISU would counter and tie the game at 6-6, but UWGB went on a run and held a 16-11 margin at the midpoint of the set. Iowa State worked back into the set, narrowing the margin to 24-23, before Phoenix head coach Debbie Kirch called a timeout. The Cyclones were the team to respond after the timeout by tying the game and then taking their first lead at 25-24 off a block by Renae Pruess and Julie Mitchell. Mitchell put ISU up by two with her fourth kill of the set and then Mandi Harms notched three-straight kills to give the Cyclones the opening set, 30-26.
ISU would be the team to take an early lead in the second game, jumping out to an early 4-1 advantage. UWGB tied the contest at 10-10, but the Cyclones converted on several opportunities and took what would be their biggest lead of the set at 19-14. Wisconsin-Green Bay battled back and behind back-to-back aces by Kaelyn Zaporski tied the match, 22-22. It would be a seesaw battle from that point on until ISU's Mitchell drilled her sixth kill of the match and then a blocking error by UWGB gave ISU the set, 30-28.
The seesaw battle that developed in game two would reform again in game three. UWGB took a sizeable lead at 17-9, but ISU fought back and narrowed the margin to 21-20. The two teams would trade points, but the Phoenix, led by Crystal Nucech's six kills, claimed the third game, 30-25. Brittany Dalager, Renae Pruess and Harms all collected four kills in the set for the Cyclones, but it wasn't enough as UWGB narrowed ISU's match lead to 2-1.
The fourth set would continue in similar fashion as the previous three games, with neither squad able to maintain a healthy lead. Once again the Cyclones fell behind early, but were able to come back and knot the match at 14-14. ISU would build a 22-18 margin, forcing UWGB's Kirch to take her second timeout of the set. Iowa State was able to fend off a Wisconsin-Green Bay comeback and maintained a three point advantage until Pruess drilled her 12th kill off the match to secured the Cyclone victory.
"This match was a gut check for this team and I was pleased with the way they responded," ISU head coach Linda Crum said. "There were several close games and unlike the previous match we were able to convert crucial points to win the games. The team was much more consistent today and took advantage of the opportunities when they were there. "
The Cyclones finish up play in the Amerihost Classic, Saturday at 5:30 p.m. vs. Morehead State.
