AUSTIN, Texas - Ashlie McWee had six kills and Katie Kruenegel added four kills, but it wasn't enough as Iowa State fell to No. 25 Texas in three games in Saturday night volleyball action. The match was played in Texas' Gregory Gymnasium. Sophomore Brittany Dalager was the defensive leader for the Cyclones with 14 digs.
The loss moves the Cyclones overall recorded to 9-12 and 0-9 in league play. Texas' Mira Topic and Bethany Howden each pounded 14 kills on the night to help the Longhorns improve to 16-3 overall and to 8-2 in Big 12 action.
The Longhorns dominated the match offensively and defensively, hitting .388 from the floor and collecting 48 digs. Texas committed just 10 hitting errors on 98 attacks. The Cyclones were limited to 30 kills and a .030 hitting percentage. Iowa State passed the ball very well, setting up McWee and Kruenegel, ISU's middle hitters, with 10 kills combined.
ISU's Senior Sara Stribe had two kills, four digs and 23 assists to help the Cyclone cause on the afternoon. Stribe now has 2,573 assists, which places her third on ISU's all-time career list.
The Cyclones were competitive in game one, pounding 12 kills to Texas' 14 kills. But the Longhorns hit .333 from the floor compared to ISU's .105 and defeated the Cyclones, 30-22.
In game two, the Longhorns turned up the offensive heat, hitting a sizzling .455 from the floor, while holding the Cyclones to .063 hitting from the floor. Texas had 17 kills to ISU's 12 and defeated Iowa State in game two, 30-18.
In game three, Texas pounded 17 kills had just five errors and hit .375 from the floor, while holding Iowa State to six digs. The Longhorns won game three, 30-17 and the match, 3-0.
Senior Renae Pruess had two digs and three blocks and Mandi Harms had seven digs and one block to help the Cyclone effort.
"I thought we played pretty competitively, especially in games one and two" Head Coach Linda Crum said. "I thought our passing was good. It set up Ashlie and Katie very nicely for some great kills. But Texas is a great team. They just out-executed us tonight and played very well. I think we are making very good progress and played very well in parts of the match tonight. We will continue to improve."
Iowa State will return home to play host to Colorado on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Hilton Coliseum. First serve will be at 7 p.m.
