AMES, Iowa - Mandi Harms had a team-high 19 kills, along with 18 digs and Brittany Dalager had a team-high 26 digs and 16 kills, but it wasn't enough as Iowa State dropped a hard-fought match to No. 24 Missouri in five games (3-2) Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. It was Iowa State's second five-game match of the season. The Cyclones won games one (33-31) and game three (30-22), before having close losses in games four and five. Cyclones Ashlie McWee and Renae Pruess added 10 and 15 kills, respectively, while Sara Stribe and Dana Koziol had 14 and 16 digs, respectively.
Tonight's match was the sixth double-figure kill/dig match for Harms and it was Dalager's 17th-career double-double.
The loss moves the Cyclones overall recorded to 10-19 and 1-16 in league play. Missouri's Christi Myers pounded 21 kills on the afternoon to help the Tigers improve to 22-6 overall and to 11-5 in Big 12 action.
Iowa State held the advantage in hitting percentage, hitting .220 from the floor compared to Missouri's .176. But the match was pretty even as Missouri had one more kill than ISU (72-71) and the two teams tied in digs with 93 each. Missouri committed 35 hitting errors on 220 attacks. The Cyclones had 27 hitting errors on 200 attacks and held a solid advantage in the block totals with 16 to MU's 11. Some of the bright spots of the evening were the play of Harms and Dalager, both of whom had kill/dig double-doubles and junior Renae Pruess and Ashlie McWee, who had 15 and 10 kills, respectively, for the Cyclones.
ISU's Sara Stribe did a solid job leading the team with eight kills, 14 digs and 46 assists. Stribe now had 2834 career assists, which places her third on ISU's all-time assist list. Christine Smeele added 12 digs and Katie Kruenegel pounded three kills and had four block-assists on the afternoon.
Iowa State and Missouri both came out with some offensive power in game one as each team pretty close in hitting percentage (.182 to .189). Missouri pounded 19 kills to ISU's 17 and MU had 25 digs to ISU's 23. Harms had six kills and Dalager added four. Missouri had a two-point lead at 28-26 but kills by Harms and Pruess tied up the score as Iowa State went on to win a hard-fought game one, 33-31.
"I thought we competed and played very well in game one," Head Coach Linda Crum said. "Mandi (Harms) did well in terms of offense and our passing was good."
Missouri rebounded in game two, although ISU held the advantage statistically. The Cyclones hit .192 from the floor, while holding MU to .184 and had 17 kills to the Tigers' 15. But Iowa State had three reception errors and three ball-handling errors that resulted in Missouri points. With the Cyclones down 25-12, the team rallied and pulled the score within five and lost game two, 30-25. Harms again added six kills, while Dalager and Pruess added four and three, respectively.
Iowa State used the momentum from it's rally in game two to dominate game three. The Cyclones hit a sizzling .308 from the floor and held Missouri to .020 from the floor. ISU pounded 15 kills to MU's 13 and had four team blocks to Missouri's 0. The difference was hitting errors. Missouri had 12 hitting errors to ISU's three and the Cyclones won game three, 30-22. Dalager had four kills and seven digs in game three.
Game four was a battle from start to finish as neither team could get a lead of more than a point before the other team came back. Iowa State hit .256 from the floor to Missouri's 270 and had 16 digs to MU's 15. But Iowa State couldn't sustain its rally and lost game four, 30-25.
Missouri came out strong in game five and hit .368 to ISU's .118 and had 10 kills to ISU's six. With the score 12-11 in Missouri's favor, the Tigers scored the next three points to win the game, 15-11, and the match, 3-2.
"I am very proud of how the kids came out and competed today," Crum said. "They really came out and put pressure on Missouri to defend our game. We were the aggressor today and put them in a position where they needed to respond. We did some really good things and we didn't let down. We just didn't quite have the momentum to keep things going towards the end of game four and into game five. It's disappointing for all of us. I thought Mandi (Harms) played a great game today. She had some great swings and really gave us that senior leadership today. Brittany (Dalager) had some key digs for us in places where we really needed to keep the momentum going."
Iowa State will remain home to play host to Texas on Wednesday, Nov. 20. First serve will be at 7 p.m. Iowa State lost to Texas, 3-0, earlier in the season.
