AMES, Iowa - Brittany Dalager had 12 kills and Renae Pruess added 10 kills, but it wasn't enough as Iowa State fell to Texas in three games, Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum. Dalager was also the defensive leader for the Cyclones with 17 digs. It was Dalager's 17th career double-double. Senior Mandi Harms sat out tonight's match with a sprained ankle. It was the first missed match for Harms this season. Senior Sara Stribe had five kills, 13 digs and 33 assists for ISU. She only needs six assists to record her 1,000th assist of the season.
The loss moves the Cyclones overall recorded to 10-20 and 1-17 in league play. Texas' Bethany Howden pounded 18 kills on the night to help the Longhorns improve to 21-7 overall and to 11-7 in Big 12 action.
Game one generated plenty of offense for the teams as both Iowa State and Texas had 15 team kills each. But the difference was the errors. Texas had only three errors on 35 attacks while ISU had nine errors on 45 attacks. The Longhorns hit a sizzling .343 for the match, while holding the Cyclones to .133. ISU got the edge defensively with 19 digs to UT's 16. Pruess had five kills in game one, while Dalager added three. Texas won game one, 30-28.
"Game one was where I really thought we could take advantage of our hitting and passing," Head Coach Linda Crum said. "We were hitting very well (.133) but just couldn't quite take ourselves over that line. Renae (Pruess) and Brittany (Dalager) really stepped it up in game one, especially, and played well. And when we were missing Mandi (Harms), that was especially important."
Game two was another offensive game with both teams hitting well. Texas hit a hot .356 from the floor, including 17 kills and only one error, while Iowa State hit a solid .205 with 13 kills and five errors. The Cyclones once again had the defensive edge, with 22 digs to UT's 14. Dalager had four kills and six digs in game two, while Pruess added three kills. Stribe had seven digs in the game. Texas went on to win the second game, 30-20.
Game three was all Texas even though Iowa State hit a solid .270 from the floor. The Longhorns hit a match-high .404 from the floor with 22 kills and only three errors on 47 attacks. The Cyclones were held to 13 kills on 37 attacks. The defensive battle of game three again went to the Cyclones with 18 digs to UT's 17. Iowa State also outblocked the Longhorns 4-2. But Texas won game three, 30-26, and the match, 3-0.
"I am really proud of the way the kids played tonight," Crum said. "The played competitively both mentally and physically. Texas is a good team and we really felt like we were competitive with them tonight and pushed them all the way. I was very proud of Renae and Kelly (Melohn) really played well filling in for Mandi. She had some good, solid kills for us tonight. Sara did a great job of running the offense and gave us that much-needed spark when we needed it."
Iowa State will have the weekend off and then return to the road to play Texas Tech on Wednesday, Nov. 27, starting at 7 p.m. The Cyclones will close the 2002 season at home on Nov. 30, when they play host to Texas A&M, starting at 2 p.m. Seniors Mandi Harms and Sara Stribe will be honored.
