AMES, Iowa - Brittany Dalager had nine kills and Renae Pruess added seven kills, but it wasn't enough as Iowa State fell to Texas Tech in three games, Wednesday night at Texas Tech's United Spirit Arena. Dana Koziol was Iowa State's defensive leader with 12 digs. Dalager added 10 digs for the Cyclones. Senior Sara Stribe had two kills, six digs and 26 assists for ISU. Her 26 assists put her over the 1,000 assist mark for the season.
The loss moves the Cyclones overall recorded to 10-21 and 1-18 in league play. Texas Tech's Kelly Johnson pounded 21 kills on the night to help the Red Raiders improve to 14-14 overall and to 9-10 in Big 12 action.
For the match, Iowa State hit .089 from the floor, compared to .229 for Texas Tech. But the Cyclones had a huge blocking advantage, outblocking the Red Raiders, 18-7. TTU had 56 kills to Iowa State's 34.
In game one, both teams played pretty evenly as Texas Tech hit .180 from the floor compared to .178 for the Cyclones. But the difference was the kills. Texas Tech had 20 kills on 50 attempts, while Iowa State had 16 kills on 45 attempts. The two teams both played a good defensive game with 17 digs each. Iowa State had the slight block advantage, 6-5. Dalager had six kills and Mandi Harms added three. Texas Tech won a hard-fought game one, 31-29.
"I thought we played very well in game one." Head Coach Linda Crum said. "We were down 10-4 early and went on a nice run to tie up the score. The kids played competitively and I really thought we did some nice things to keep Texas Tech off balance a little bit."
Game two was another competitive game for the Cyclones. The Red Raiders held a slight kill advantage, 16-13 and hit .260 compared to ISU's .036. Texas Tech also had one more dig than ISU, 26-25. But again, the Cyclones outblocked their opponent, 3-0. The difference was the errors. TTU had only three errors on 50 attempts, while ISU had 11 errors on 55 attempts. Pruess had five kills, while Dalager added two. Texas Tech went on to win the second game, 30-22.
Game three was all Texas Tech as it hit .250 from the floor, compared to a .057 clip from the Cyclones. The Red Raiders had 20 kills to Iowa State's five. The Cyclones had just three errors, however, to the Red Raiders 11. Texas Tech won game three, 30-18, and the match, 3-0.
"I was disappointed in how we can out in game three," Crum said. "I just felt there was a big let down after we came out from intermission. But overall, I was pleased with how competitive we were and we did a good job in terms of adjusting to things on the court and we did a good job of playing defense and blocking. I thought Brittany (Dalager) played a solid match and really provided the spark in a lot of areas. I thought Renae (Pruess) did a very nice job in terms of getting some key blocks for us. Ashlie (McWee) and Katie (Kruenegel) had solid games in the middle for us and really got some great kills for us."
The Cyclones will close the 2002 season at home on Saturday, Nov. 30, when they play host to Texas A&M, starting at 2 p.m. Seniors Mandi Harms and Sara Stribe will be honored.
