OKLAHOMA CITY - The Iowa State softball team ended the 2002 season with a 5-1 loss vs. Oklahoma on the second day of the 2002 Big 12 Tournament. Kelly Wardein led the way offensively for ISU, finishing the contest 2-of-3 at the plate. The loss finalizes Iowa State's overall record at 19-25, while Oklahoma improves to 43-13.
The Cyclones were able to take an early 1-0 lead in the first. Lindsey Herrin drove a single into left field plating Julia Lindsey who had opened the inning with a single of her own. Herrin was left stranded at first when Katie Ruby struckout to end the ISU threat.
Oklahoma wasted no time in tieing the contest, as its second batter, Kelli Braitsch, homered over the right center fence. ISU starting pitcher Erica Martinez regained controlled and recorded the final two outs of the inning to keep the game at a 1-1 tie.
After holding ISU scoreless in the top of the second OU took advantage of a Cyclone error to take its first lead of the game at 2-1. Heather Scaglione opened the stanza with a single and then moved to second on a SAC bunt by OU's Erin Evans. An error allowed Jessica Leslie to reach first safely and also allowed Scalione to arrive safely at third. Scalione then came home to score on a wild pitch moments later. Following what should have been the third out of the inning, Christy Ring notched a single to center field, scoring Tiffany Weight from second. Ring ended the inning as she got caught leaving the base early in a steal attempt.
Martinez (10-17), who finished the day allowing five runs to score on six hits, held the Sooners scoreless over the next two innings. But unfortunately for ISU the Oklahoma offense notched two more runs in the bottom of the fifth pushing their lead to 5-1.
Oklahoma reliever Kami Keiter came into secure the win for OU, and she did her job, holding ISU scoreless for the remainder of the game. She got the win to improve to 12-6 after working three innings and allowing just two hits. Sooner starter Angela Foster was replaced after pitching the opening four stanzas. She allowed one run to score on five hits and struck out four Cyclone batters.
