LAWRENCE, Kan. ? Renae Pruess had 11 kills and Dana Koziol added 17 digs but it wasn't enough as the Kansas Jayhawks defeated Iowa State, 3-0, Friday night in Lawrence, Kan. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 10-10 overall and 2-7 in Big 12 play. Josi Lima led Kansas with 14 kills. Kansas improves to 13-7 overall.
The Jayhawks dominated the match offensively and defensively, hitting .195 from the floor and collecting 62 digs. Kansas committed 22 hitting errors on 128 attacks. The Cyclones were limited to 34 kills, a .097 hitting percentage and 51 digs. The Cyclones had a solid blocking night with 14 blocks, compared to seven from Kansas.
ISU's Nicole Lorenzen drilled seven kills and sophomore Ashlie McWee added four kills and five total blocks to help the Cyclone cause on the night. Sophomore Brittany Dalager had nine kills for ISU. She now has 1,030 digs, which ranks eighth on ISU's all-time career dig list. Sophomore Christine Smeele came in and added four kills.
“I thought Christine came in and did a really nice job for us,” head coach Linda Crum said. “She really stabilized us, especially in game two, and was very efficient.”
In game one, Kansas hit .286 from the floor, while holding Iowa State to .022 and pounded 16 kills compared to ISU's 13. The Cyclones had 46 attacks, but dropped game one, 30-21.
The Cyclones played a solid game in game two, hitting .114 from the floor and pounding 10 kills on 44 attacks, but Kansas had 17 kills and hit .127 from the floor to take a tight game two, 31-29. The two teams went into the locker-room with Kansas up two games to none.
“I thought we played well in game two,” Crum said. “Our blocking really stepped up in that game.”
Game three was all Kansas as the Cyclones were held to .176 from the floor, while the Jayhawks hit .219 from the floor. ISU pounded 11 kills compared to Kansas' 14. Kansas won game three, 30-19, and the match, 3-0.
“Overall, I thought we could've played a much better match,” Crum said. “We didn't have a good night serving and that was really the key in the match. We need to get much better at that before we play Kansas State. We did some good things with our blocking and such, but we can do much better.”
Iowa State returns home to play host to No. 8 Kansas State on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Hilton Coliseum. First serve is at 7 p.m.
