DALLAS, Texas - Seven Iowa State student-athletes were named to the 2003 Soccer Academic All-Big 12 Team, which the conference announced Tuesday. Kelly Burke and Beth Chapman received Academic All-Big 12 first team honors for the second and third times, respectively. Cyclones named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team for the first time include Kristina Baumann, Deb Benakis, Amy Flores, Kate Kirwan and Laura Schweer.
Chapman, a senior goalkeeper, is an animal science/pre-veterinary medicine major. The Brentwood, Tenn., native is the fifth Iowa State soccer player to be named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team three times. She is Iowa State's all-time leader in minutes in goal (4,896) and shutouts (10).
Burke is a junior forward from Plano, Texas. A dietetics major, she played in all 19 games this season and took five shots. She was also named to the 2002 Academic All-Big 12 first team.
Baumann, a sophomore forward, is majoring in business. She leads all current Cyclones with 28 career points. A native of Naperville, Ill., she was named to the Wisconsin Invitational All-Tournament Team after collecting four points in games against Wisconsin and Michigan this season.
Benakis, who hails from St. Charles Ill., is studying exercise and sport science at Iowa State. The sophomore midfielder started all 19 games and finished third on the team with four goals and 31 shots this season.
Flores is a sophomore forward from Sacramento, Calif., who is undecided on a major. She earned Offensive MVP honors after scoring two goals at the Arizona Invitational to open the 2003 season. She scored one goal in each of Iowa State's final three Big 12 contests.
Kirwan, a redshirt freshman, is undecided on a major. The Flower Mound, Texas, native ranked second in the Big 12 with 15 points in conference games and was recently named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer team. She led Iowa State with eight goals, 21 points and 48 shots in 2003.
Schweer, a junior midfielder, is a business major from Wheaton, Ill. She played in 18 games, making seven starts. She started five Big 12 contests for Iowa State.
Iowa State sets a new program record with seven student-athletes named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team. The previous mark was six in 2002.
