AMES, Iowa - Andre Emmett scored 25 points on 11-for-12 shooting and Will Chavis had eight of his 22 points in a decisive second-half run that carried Texas Tech to an 88-73 victory over Iowa State on Wednesday night.
Texas Tech (14-6, 4-5) dominated with solid offensive execution over the final 14 minutes and gave coach Bob Knight victory No. 801 on his second try. The Red Raiders lost at Missouri on Sunday after beating Nebraska on Feb. 5 to make Knight the fourth Division I men's coach to win 800 games.
Jake Sullivan kept Iowa State (12-8, 2-7) in it for a while with his outside shooting and finished with 29 points, including a career-best seven 3-pointers. But when Sullivan cooled, the Cyclones faded.
The first half ended 46-all and was a clinic on offense, Iowa State shooting 70.4 percent and Texas Tech 65.5 percent. But Iowa State cooled to 39 percent in the second half and Texas Tech kept connecting, finishing at 64.2 percent for the game.
The Red Raiders were so proficient that they made 9-of-14 3-point shots. They entered the game shooting 29.9 percent from 3-point range.
Knight improved to 6-0 against Iowa State in his first appearance at Hilton Coliseum since his Indiana team beat the Cyclones 87-76 on Dec. 21, 1990. The often fiery coach stayed in his chair most of the time and was far less animated than his counterpart, Iowa State's Larry Eustachy.
Sullivan made back-to-back 3s to give Iowa State a 54-53 lead with 14:46 remaining. But he did not make another shot from beyond the arc after that and Texas Tech went on a 14-0 run to open a 67-54 lead.
Chavis, the smallest player on the floor at 5-feet-10, scored eight straight points during the run. He converted a three-point play off a basket inside, made a 3-pointer and lofted a shot over 6-9 Jared Homan for another basket.
After Iowa State drew to 75-64 on Sullivan's jumper, Emmett scored in the lane, hit a 3-pointer and fed Kasib Powell for a layup to spark an 11-0 run that took the lead to 84-64 and finished off the Cyclones.
Powell added 19 points and seven assists, while Chavis had six steals and six assists. Jackson Vroman scored 24 points for Iowa State.
